Varsity football: Hersey 12, WHS 8
Sports — By admin on October 23, 2009 10:56 pmThe WHS varsity football team (2-7) hoped to close out their season with a win against Hersey. But after the Cats jumped out to an 8-0 lead, the Hersey defense took advantage of WHS turnovers, and the offense converted those turnovers into a 12-8 Hersey victory.
It rained for the fifth straight Friday, and mud covered more of the field than grass. The sluggish conditions slowed both offenses.
Tyler Brady, sophomore and quarterback, took the ball in for a score early in the second quarter. The Hersey defense came up with a safety before halftime, tackling a WHS player in the Wheeling end zone. Still, the Cats retained an 8-2 halftime lead.
In the second half, Hersey scored a touchdown with 6:44 remaining in the third quarter, giving them a 9-8 lead. Hersey then kicked a field goal after recovering a WHS fumble. Down 12-8 with two minutes left in the game, Peter Durbin, junior and quarterback, completed a pass to Matt Splon, senior and receiver, on a fourth down.
The drive stalled there, though, and Hersey got the ball back and ran the clock out.
The Hersey victory snapped their 12-game losing streak spanning into the middle of last season. The loss for WHS makes their final record on the season 2-7.
