Tyler Cochrane, senior and varsity receiver, watches as his team attempts to recover from the lead made by the Knights during the homecoming football game.
WHS started by winning the first two games of the 2009 season, but the rest of the season brought less luck for the Wildcats, who have lost six consecutive games since then.
“We had opportunities, but we couldn’t sustain drives,” Dave Dunbar, head varsity coach, said.
At the homecoming game against the Prospect Knights, the Cats were unable to stop Peter Bonahoom, Prospect varsity running back, from running in four runs and catching one for a total of five touchdowns throughout the game. Bonahoom assisted the Knights to the ending victory score of 54-15.
The WHS’ defense gave up a total of 386 yards in the first half of the game. Tyler Brady, sophomore and WHS varsity quarterback, gave the Wildcats’ their first touchdown at the two yard line in the second quarter.
“I thought Brady ran the ball well, we just had trouble executing on some of our offensive plays,” Coach Dunbar said.
The Wildcats’ season played out similarly, having been completely shut-out for two of its games. However, it did not dampen the players spirit.
At the game against Elk Grove, Brian Hauck, varsity defensive coordinator, stated that the Wildcats didn’t do a very good job on their defense, especially since they gave up 35 points throughout the game.
“At some point, (the) guys are just going to have to accept the fact either they want to play 100 percent and don’t care about who it is that shows up, or we’re going to lose like we lost tonight,” Coach Hauck said.
The Wheeling Wildcats face the Hersey Huskies tonight at 7:30p.m. for an away game.
