During 5th and 7th periods today, the a’capella group No Strings Attached from the University of Illinois performed for WHS choirs. The group sang jazz songs like “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t got that Swing,” as well as pop songs like Cobra Starship’s “Snakes on a Plane.”
“We do some jazz, which not a lot of a’capella groups do,” Lauren Yang, No Strings Attached member, said.
The members of the group all have been involved in music throughout most of their lives.
“Music is something that has always been present in my life,” Yang said.
She began in music through her father who plays violin.
“Music is in my family,” she said.
Kimmy Schofield, another member of the ensemble, studied under WHS Choir Director Kirsten Snelten at Lake Zurich High School.
“She adhered to everyone’s individual needs,” Schofield said. “She helped me on my range and sight reading, which is really helpful.”
Schofield sang in middle school as well as her last two years of high school.
“I got to college and I wasn’t going to do it (sing),” Schofield said. “But I kind of missed it.”
Ms. Snelten booked the performance in November, choosing this group specifically to support her former student. Additionally, she felt that since she started an a’capella group at WHS, they could learn from No Strings Attached.
The group contains only three music majors.
Additionally, during 7th period, Madrigals Singers performed a song of their own, the modernized version of the classic Spanish carol “Fum, Fum, Fum” entitled “Techno Fum,” for No Strings Attached.
