Radio station awards Berger 1000 dollar check

Laura Berger, Learning Center supervisor, experienced a dream come true, according to her, on Jan. 22 when Lauren McDaniel and Mike Obriell, promotional assistants for 101.9 The Mix radio station, presented her with a check worth 1000 dollars.

Ms. Berger, who frequently tunes into The Mix, overheard a contest and decided to investigate it further online. The contest required those who wished to enter a chance to win the grand prize (1000 dollars) to explain what one would use the money for if he or she won the contest.

Ms. Berger wished to be able to attend the Susan G. Koman for the Cure Walk with her mother, but in order to do so, they each needed to raise 2300 dollars, a large and difficult sum according to Ms. Berger.

A week after entering the contest, the radio station called Ms. Berger and requested that she explain what she would do if she had won the 1000 dollars, and according to her, Ms. Berger did so with tears in her eyes. Then, that afternoon, the DJ announced she had won.

“I was on cloud nine. I called everyone,” she said.

Ms. Berger did her first walked for the cause last year, and although the program offers training, she decided to do her own training with a friend instead. However, according to her, she regretted it later.

“I always thought ‘Why are these people complaining about blisters? It’s only walking.’ But it is hard,” Ms. Berger said.

According to her, Ms. Berger walks for breast cancer because her family has had every form of cancer except breast cancer so she “walks to keep it that way.”

What could make her dream come true even better? Ms. Berger’s mother’s birthday is on the day of the opening ceremonies.

“I can’t wait to share it (the experience) with my mom because I know it will be an amazing and awesome experience for her,” Ms. Berger said.
