Ending the season as an all-conference player and ninth for top average on the varsity level in conference , the only thing Athlete of the Week Jenny Schmitt, senior, missed was State.
“I would describe my season as short. The season lasts from November to February but it seems like it lasts three weeks,” Schmitt said. “I also believe it was short because I was just short of my goal on making State… it was a heart breaker.”
This season she placed third for high game, 266 points, and high series for the conference, 706 points against Conant where she bowled a 204, 236 and 266.
According to Ms. Beth Anderson, varsity bowling coach, Schmitt deserves Athlete of the Week because she is an excellent leader. She has also organized off season leagues and her devotion to bowling has influenced her teammates and her personality has inspired them.
“I am a role model because I was always a leader on the lanes. I always promoted good sportsmanship,” Schmitt said. “I lead the team in averages this season and I helped all the girls get better.”
Schmitt differentiates from others because of her goals and devotion to the team and sport.
“Her ability to have high individual goals and realistic team goals (differentiate her from other players),” Anderson said. “Her desire to have the team do well, but if we falter she has improved her individual focus so that she can try to attain her goal for that competition. If one person struggles, she helps everyone else avoid being ‘sucked in.’”
According to Schmitt, her biggest role model is Kelly Kulick, pro bowler.
“My biggest role model would be Kelly Kulick for beating the men on the Professional Bowling Association in the Tournament of Champions. She believed she could beat the men and she went out and did it,” Schmitt said.
The highlight of Schmitt’s season became when she helped the Wildcat bowling team beat the undefeated Schaumburg in two games.
“We beat them once last year and going into the meet I wanted to beat them again and we did twice,” Schmitt said. “We were the talk of the day for beating them and this made other teams open up their eyes and see Wheeling won’t back down.”
