The WHS Gay-Straight Alliance, or GSA, uses new forms of publicity and fundraising ideas in order to spread awareness to the student body of the dangers of bullying in school.

The group recently held a one week T-shirt sale to raise money for the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance.

“We had to order them (the shirts) really early because if we did, they would guarantee that we got the sizes that everyone wanted,” Ashley Greenberg, GSA vice president, said.

The Illinois Safe Schools Alliance works to stop bullying and to help GSA programs in schools, as well as to put together state-wide and national events for GSA programs.

Besides the T-shirt sales, GSA is also preparing for the annual Day of Silence, a day that spreads awareness of bullying and discrimination against homosexuals, bisexuals and transgenders. This year, the day of silence takes place of April 16.

According to Hannah Compton, GSA president, GSA has started to use posters to advertise the Day of Silence, in order to generate participation with all students rather than just the members of the group.

“We haven’t really ever reached out to the school before,” Greenberg said.

GSA also hopes to organize more fundraisers in the future to spread more and more awareness to the student body.

“We want to make presentations and talk to the Health classes. We’re in the midst of planning right now, but we really want to make people aware of bullying, especially with homosexuals,” Compton said.
