Last Saturday March 13, Crucial Step Clique (CSC) traveled to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to compete in the state competition hosted by the Illinois Drill Team Association (IDTA).
Although this was CSC’s first appearance at a state competition, they walked away with first place in the steppers category.
“It was scary (competing) I kept telling myself ‘please don’t mess up, please don’t mess up.’ There was definitely a lot of tension for everyone because we really wanted it,” Kim E-White, senior, said.
According to Amy Burke, senior, the team knew it would be close after regionals.
“We’d have to do extra good (to do well at state)…. It all came down to the little things that could hurt us,” Burke said.
After all the stepping groups competed, the final standings were announced.
“It was amazing that we won, there was a lot of crying, hugging and everyone was smiling,” Burke said.
Other top ranked teams included Waubonsie High School who finished in second place and Downers Grove High School who finished in third.
