This season, Sydney Keith, freshman, joined as a rookie to the varsity girls track team. Keith though is more than familiar with the sport.

In eighth grade, Keith went to State for the 100 meter dash and placed fourteenth overall. Her older sister Nikki Keith, thirty-two years old and 1994 alum, also ran at WHS. To to this day, she still holds the record for shot put which she set in 1994 at forty-two feet and nine inches and the outdoor shot put record at forty-three feet and nine inches set in 1993.

“My sister (is my role model) because she was a really good three sport athlete here (in) basketball, track and volleyball,” S. Keith said.

At the Wildcat Relays on Saturday Feb. 27, S. Keith placed second in her three debut events: 55 m dash, 200 m dash, and long jump.

“In her first high school meet, Sydney helped lead us to a second place finish,” Mike Theodosakis, varsity girls track coach, said. “On a personal level, Sydney has a great attitude and works extremely hard at practice.”

Keith competes in the long jump, hurdles, and all sprints.

Coach Theodosakis said he believes that S. Keith will excel in both the high hurdles and 200m dash. According to Coach Theodosakis, other athletes can learn from her to be positive, smiling, and work hard . S. Keith said that she has learned a lot from being on the varsity team.

“This year I’m really influenced with the seniors because they really help me. I learn a lot because once they were in my shoes,” S. Keith said. “In junior high, I was the one influencing others.”

Looking towards the future, Coach Theodosakis keeps positive about his team and athletes.

“They’re (the girls) have done a nice job training and I expect all our girls to be excited about completing and do their best,” Coach Theodosakis said. “Sydney will do what she continues to do-excel.”
