On April 16, the National Day of Silence, students at WHS stayed silent or wore green to show their support for homosexuals.

Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) raised awareness of the day and asked students to wear green or be silent over the course of the day to show their support.

Ashley Greenberg, sophomore and vice president of GSA, used a white board and marker so she could stay silent during the day, but still communicate.

“It was really hard, and I ended up talking during period 5. It’s really hard, but there are people who talked during the day that still supported it (Day of Silence). Whatever way people can bring awareness helps,” Greenberg said.

Those who wore green or Day of Silence shirts supported the cause without being silent. Cristina Gavrila, senior, wore green.

“I think it’s a good thing that people do support it and it’s a good way to stress that everyone can be themselves,” Gavrila said.

Unlike Greenberg, some people did not use white boards and stayed completely silent during the day. Greenberg believes that “prejudice should stop against gays.”

While she and others support homosexuals, other students don’t support it.

“I get upset (when people are prejudice), but I think people have their own opinion and I can’t change it. I think they could express their opinion better and they should be nicer about it,” Greenberg said.

Day of Silence was founded in 1996 and since then and is now the largest student action to make schools safer for people of all sexual orientation and gender expression.
