WHS started out their first game of the football season with a win against Maine West’s Warriors, 19-13.

Although the team had trained since school let out last year , Maine West gained an upper hand within the first 15 seconds as Jezz Buluran, Maine West’s senior wide-receiver, returned an 89 yard touchdown on the opening kick-off.

Despite the initial loss, Tyler Brady, junior quarter back did not give up hope.

“When Maine West scored that first touchdown, I was just in shock and didn’t know how that just happened, but I still had faith that our offense would be able to come through,” Brady said in an e-mail interview.

Brady’s perseverance payed off in the second quarter as he ran in a touchdown.

The Cats kept Maine West from scoring any more touchdowns in the first quarter, ending the first half tied at 7-7.

Brady ran in the first touchdown at the beginning of the second half after Jeremy Fredrick, junior slot and cat, ran the ball one yard short of a touch down.

“We had great drive, and that’s how we scored. Tyler (Brady) took charge as a leader and a veteran (on the varsity team),” Dave Dunbar, head coach, said.

Maine West scored one more touchdown in the third quarter, bringing the score to 19-13.

Although they had a chance in the fourth quarter to even up the score, the Warrior’s offense couldn’t follow through, ending the game with the Cats winning 19-13.

“Give them (WHS) the credit. They spread us out, and that quarterback (Brady) is a heck of a runner. We over-pursued and got caught. They hit us with huge gains,” Chris Hare, Main West head coach, said.

Wheeling plays Conant at 7:30 P.M on Friday in an away game next. The WHS Superfans have organized for a “tidal wave” (where everyone wears blue).
