Throughout WHS, the art department plays a pivotal role in the dynamic of the student culture. To ensure that there is the same amount of recognition in the WHS art department as there is in many of our sports and core academic classes, Spokesman has decided to list an artist of the month as students from WHS continue to embark on producing new artistic pieces of work.
This month’s artist of the month, Nikki Lemus, senior, is currently working on a new piece of work as she prepares to finalize her last few months as an Advanced Art student at WHS.
“WHS has allowed me to surround myself with groups of people that share my passion. It has also exposed me to a lot of new mediums that are fairly expensive that I normally don’t have access to,” Lemus said.
According to Eleni Sianis, art teacher, Lemus displays a strong desire and work ethic.
“Lemus definitely has a lot of artistic skills and talents,” Sianis said. “Her work is very unique. She takes every project that’s given to her and really makes it her own. I think its pretty incredible that she is so self directed. Nikki is the type of girl who creates opportunities for herself to become the best she can be.”
Lemus is currently working on new pieces of art and plans to major in Education with an emphasis on Art during her time in College.
“I started taking art classes my sophomore year,” Lemus said. “Ever since I was little, I’ve always loved to paint, and as I’ve grown older, I’ve been exposed to more elements of art that I love.
