Journalism students compete at Sectional competition

WHS journalism students competed at the IHSA Sectionals at Northern Illinois University on Saturday, April 20.  WHS took 4th place overall, and six students qualified for the State competition. Megan Jones, senior, placed first in Newspaper Design. Emily Walker, senior, placed first in Yearbook Layout: Double Page Spread. Annalisa Baranowski, freshman, and Keira Skenandore, senior, placed first in Yearbook Theme Development. Rosalie Chan, senior, placed second in Copy Editing. Kristina Piamonte, senior, placed third in Feature Photography. All six students will be representing WHS this Friday, April 26th at the IHSA State Finals at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL.

Dussling receives Friend of Scholastic Journalism award

by Megan Jones, Editor-in-Chief William Dussling, District 214 board member, has been selected as one of the five “Friends of Scholastic Journalism” national honorees for 2012 by the Journalism Education Association (JEA). “Friend of Scholastic Journalism” Award recipients are nominated by JEA members for their support, service, financial sponsorship or personal dedication toward the betterment of scholastic journalism. Dussling was nominated by Stan Zoller, Rolling Meadow High School’s newspaper adviser. The honorees are known for helping strengthen the values of free speech and civic engagement. Varsity football continues to fight throughout game, loses to Rolling Meadows

The night featured a Hometown Celebration, which honored WHS alumni, David Tuber and Dr. Melissa Thal. Tuber graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a degree in Traditional Animation, where he went on to work with Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. He is currently working on a Lego feature set to release in February 2014. Thal graduated from Indiana University with a degree in biochemistry and a minor in mathematics.
