Gangnam Orchestra performs at WHS

by Erik Hernandez, Editor-in-Chief  The Gangnam Orchestra from South Korea performed at WHS’s theater on May 1. The performance consisted of the symphony orchestra playing two pieces, followed by the Gangnam Orchestra playing six. Their performance left the audience applauding and standing up for almost ten minutes. Students successfully represent WHS at IMEA

by Robert Perales, A&E Editor After  an extensive audition process, the top placing students from Band were selected to compete and perform at the Illinois Music Education Association (IMEA) on Jan. 24, 25 and 26 in Peoria, Ill. Orchestra gains fourth director in four years

by Robert Perales, A&E Editor Orchestra welcomed its new director Sarah Struebing, current Orchestra director,  after the departure of Alex Meza, previous Orchestra director, in late January. With the arrival of a new director, Orchestra welcomed its fourth director in just four years. However, Jami Kahn, senior, felt Ms. Struebing represents “stability and control” for the Orchestra program. “She really knows what she’s doing and is extremely prepared to take the reigns of the program, which is great because we really just need some stability and control right now. Orchestra members play at wedding

by Robert Perales, A&E Editor After countless hours of rehearsal, Orchestra  members Asher Crawley,  Jami Kahn, Katrina Gustafson, and Connor Leuck, seniors, took their musical knowledge beyond the Orchestra room of WHS and performed at a local wedding on Dec. 15, 2012. According to Gustafson, the members practiced, “about thirty minutes to an hour a week since October.” Aside from the amount of practice the Orchestra members received, Kahn felt that the job was a growing experience. “We were actually pretty independent. Students chosen to represent WHS at IMEA

by Chris Nush, Staff Reporter Twenty-four students from the music department were selected to perform ensembles for the Illinois Music Educators Association’s (IMEA) district VII this fall. After auditioning for IMEA, Kaitlyn Nielsen, senior, felt that her performance did not go as well as she hoped. “It was a catastrophe,” Nielsen said. “I was disappointed because I missed a note in the scales.” When she discovered she had been chosen for IMEA, she said she felt really excited.
