Pearlman takes over head football coaching position

Brent Pearlman, former head coach at Prospect High School and former offensive coordinator at Lake Zurich High School, will take over the football head coaching position once summer football camp starts in June.
Mr. Pearlman will take the position over due to Dave Dunbar, math teacher, retiring in June.
“There were several strong, qualified candidates,” Dr. Laz Lopez, principal, said. “Mr. Pearlman has a history of such significant success, and creating that success gives him an edge on other candidates for the head football coach position.”
Mr. Pearlman coached the Prospect Knights football team for 12 years and had numerous successes, such as three class 7A IHSA State championships. While he coaches the football team, Dr. Lopez said he expects Mr. Pearlman to teach P.E. as well.
According to Randal Dunbar, instructional assistant and son of Mr. D. Dunbar, he hopes Mr. Pearlman will continue his dad’s legacy.
“Hopefully, the new coach who steps in will proceed to build the positive steps that he (Mr. D. Dunbar) has taken in that positive direction,” Mr. R. Dunbar said. “Hopefully, he continues the Wheeling Wildcat legacy.”

District benefits community through A-OK program

D214 offers high school students the opportunity to complete community service by volunteering to help seniors complete activities they can not perform.
A-OK (Acts of Kindness), an intergenerational home maintenance program, operates in the spring and fall with District 214 high school students.

“Everyone I’ve had has been wonderful, they do what they were going to do, and the only thing I do for them is have lemonade or something for them to drink…How nice these kids are, and how they do extra things they don’t even have to do,” Dolly Snyder, client, said.

This program provides low-income adults, who are at least 60 years old and live within the District 214 attendance area, maintenance services in their homes. Adult volunteers supervise the students and the services provided on a donation basis.

“It (A-OK program) helped me very much, I’m 84 years old; there’s things I can’t do anymore,” Ms. Snyder said.

According to Barbara Bergquist, District 214 administrative assistant, the administration determines the amount of students that help. Those students receive training before helping the seniors to understand what is expected of them.

“I like it (program), I think for students and for myself servicing the community and doing something for someone else,” Ryan Schiltz, counselor, said. “Servicing others–I think it’s a very important piece of life.”

Lilly Bektemirova, senior, and four other WHS students went to Snyder’s house to complete service hours in the beginning of October and helped her by raking leafs, cleaning windows and gutters,

“We just all worked together as a team, we all finished a lot earlier, after we were finished cleaning, we were able to talk to the owner of the house and get to know her better, and she gave us lemonade,” Bektemirova said.

Students can clean gutters, wash/winterize windows, rake leaves, trim bushes, replace light bulbs, change furnace/water heater filters, tack down loose carpeting, and do minor maintenance chores, such as installing/testing smoke detectors, minor plumbing repairs and other household needs.

“I think it’s a wonderful thing that’s done. I hear how appreciative they (seniors) are,” Mike Field, director of community education services said.

“It could be just any neighbor that might need help around their house,” Bektemirova said.

“They (volunteers) come out with a greater sense of self, because they’ve done something for someone else,” Ms. Schiltz said.

Additionally, some older adults and high school students planned an annual Intergenerational Prom that will take place on April 14 from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Older adult district residents and high school students organized this April event, and during “Prom Night,” the young and the old share the dance floor.

Green adds mystery to album

What does Anthony Green sound like? Does he make music that I would listen to? These thought were running through my head the first time I heard of Green on one of my many social networking sites. When he appeared on my favorite music magazine, Alternative Press Magazine, talking about his new album, I knew I had to look him up. Now, I’m thankful I did.

Green starts out his newest album, “Beautiful Things,” with a fun, upbeat song called “If I Don’t Sing.” The long intro begins with background voices continuously singing a simple “Oh,” which continues as the drums notes pound their way into the song.

When Green’s voice finally sings the first verse, I realize his voice has some mystery to it. It’s really hard to describe his voice to the fullest because it was so unique. I cannot pinpoint exactly what his voice sounds like because, really, it sounds like nothing I’ve heard before; which made me really eager to listen on.

While “If I Don’t Sing” has a really happy tone, the lyrics surrounding it take on a sadder tune. “And I’ll always be unhappy one way or the other.” After listening to this song, I realized I couldn’t get those catchy words out of my head; and I found myself singing it around my house. Green definitely knows how to make his songs stick in people’s minds.

“Moon Song” was another one of these songs. It immediately captured my attention with its heavy drum beat. Green’s legato voice floats through the song carelessly, allowing the whole song to flow together. I really enjoyed just swaying along to the gentle tone, which made me surprised when the song took on a heavier beat towards the end of the song. This heaviness built up the ending, making me speechless and wanting more when the last note ended.

When “Love You No Matter What” started, my love for the album stopped short. With a kiddish beat, whiny voice, and elementary lyrics, the song seems underdeveloped and a huge step in the wrong direction for Green’s style. The song just keeps repeating that “I’ll love you no matter what.” The high pitched background singers, which made me like of nursery rhymes and dolls, didn’t help his cause at all. I didn’t want to listen to the song again. Maybe if he changed some of the lyrics, fixed the beat, and got rid of the creepy background singers he could at least start to push the song in a better direction.

The rest of the album couldn’t live up to the beginning songs; but overall, I enjoyed Green’s sound. The very soothing beats and his mesmerizing voice calms me. He has a strong band filled with different sounds that help making each song different from the previous. But, he might want to work on his song writing abilities.

‘Big meet for the boys’ swim team ends with loss

The varsity boys swim team lost against Buffalo Grove High School at a home meet on Jan. 13.

According to Tod Schwager, head varsity coach, this was a “big” meet for the boys.

“We practiced two weeks for this meet, and sometimes we practiced twice a day: before and after school. We hope to swim hard,” Dan Shriber, senior said.

As usual, the boys placed in almost every event. Bryce Maczko, sophomore, came in first in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay.

“The highlight (of the meet) would definitely be the 400 free,” Zack Edelstein, senior, said.

In the last event of the night, the boys won against BG by a fingernail in the 400 freestyle relay.

Some of the boys did not meet their personal bests though.

According to Aleksey Razin, sophomore, one of his goals for next time is to improve on his swim times since he fell back a little on his times this meet.

Overall, the loss did not greatly effect the team’s final score.

“BG is good competition. We played them in water polo, so we knew that they were gonna be good,” Ben Rieff, captain and senior, said.
