Nickl wins writing award at Harper competition

Maggie Nickl, junior, received an honorable mention for an essay she submitted at a local competition, which took place at Harper College.
Although other members of Speech team also attended, Nickl was the only member to receive an award.
“I was so surprised because the essay I submitted was supposed to be spoken rather than read, so I didn’t think it would translate too well,” Nickl said.
Although Nickl found the award as a surprise, she plans to continue her success at further competitions.
“I really want to improve by putting more effort into editing and continuing my successes by picking a topic I know pretty well,” Nickl said.
Although Nickl is not currently aware of future competitions, she “would love to compete” and continue to succeed as a writer

Accounting Club works with Relay for Life to collect money

Accounting Club prepares for Relay for Life by collecting money at Bank Night and Relay for Life.
“We usually collect between $30,000 and $40,000,” Kevin Lennon, business teacher, said. “It’s cool to see that much cash coming in.”
On May 8, they had a meeting, where they received accounting training for Relay for Life. On May 9, Accounting Club will collect money at Relay for Night’s Bank Night, where Relay for Life participants can turn in the money they have raised. Bank Night will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at BMO Harris Bank.
“We will be accounting for Relay for Life,” Tyler Levy, junior, said. “We will go to Harris Bank to verify the amount of money people have donated.”
At Relay for Life on May 19, the club will stay from 5 p.m. to midnight collecting cash raised for Relay for Life and helping with the silent auction.
“One, they’re helping a good cause. Two, they get hands-on accounting experience, which is good for their resume,” Mr. Lennon said.
The college accounting class also participated at the Harper College Accounting Competition on April 20, which the schools from the Mid-Suburban League competed in. Overall as a team, WHS placed first. Last year, WHS also placed first.
“It was nice to retain our championship status,” Mitchell Zaretsky, junior, said.
For individual awards, Zaretsky received second place; Nick Kopala, senior, received fourth place; and Levy received fifth place.

Science club sells jelly beans to fundraise for Clearbrook

By selling jelly beans from April 23-27, the Science Club raised $550 for Clearbrook, a provider of services, programs and support for disabled adults and children.
In the past, Science Club members raised more than $600 by selling candy in order to save the rainforest, but it has not decided which organization to give the funds to.
Science Club focuses on “educating (students) why it’s important to keep the environment healthy and how it affects weather and the whole environment,” Donna Caponigro, special education teacher, said.
According to Ms. Caponigro, WHS maintains first place in D211 and D214 in who has raised more money.
Later on, the club plans to clean up gardens.
“I think it’s amazing what they were able to accomplish,” Ms. Caponigro said.

Wind Symphony performs at Superstate

Wheeling’s Wind Symphony played at University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill. for Superstate on May 5.
The symphony performed “Aurora Awakes” and “Danza Number Two” in the Great Hall.
Along with WHS, other high schools and middle schools like MacArthur Middle School played at the event.
“I was really tired afterwards because I put in so much effort, but I think I could have done better,” Matt Erickson, junior, said.
Judging after the competition began at 8 p.m. In the end, Hersey High School placed the highest amongst the schools.
“I think I did better than I usually do. There were moments that I felt exposed and off tune, but overall we (WHS) did well,” Meghan Ausnehmer, junior, said.

Girls water polo takes MSL East Conference, loses against Fremd

Girls water polo lost 3-10 against Fremd High School at MSL Conference on May 2. While the Wildcats did not win conference overall, they took the MSL East title.
“We won the MSL East championship, so what’s done is done,” Keara Myatt, junior, said. “Our disappointments was that we kept getting the ball turned over.”
According to Kat Dobrowski, junior, the team struggled with offense. Dobrowski got injured during the game.
“We definitely struggled with our offense,” Dobrowski said. “It was a little disappointing with the outcome of the game.”
In addition, one of the referees did not show up.
“We played good man-up, man-down,” Sam Mozdzynski, junior, said. “They’re really tall, fast swimmers, and they had the home field advantage.”
The Wildcats will play against Conant tonight. Sectionals will take place on May 10 and May 11.
“I’m really proud of us going into the season…we weren’t sure of how the competition would be,” Dobrowski said.
