MMI students recycle cans to help shelter pay for food (Nov. 21, 1990)

Mild Mentally Impaired (MMI) students have been recycling aluminum cans at WHS since last spring.
They collect over 400 cans a day.
The pupils put out recycling bins in the cafeteria and foyer for students to deposit their empty cans, with the help of Floyd Fry, building and grounds supervisor.
“There are fewer cans now than before because of the weather,” Sara Jacobson, MMI aide, said.
So far, the project has raised around $200.
Some of the money is going to a shelter in Chicago. This will help pay for Thanksgiving dinners for the poor.
“The kids are working hard, putting a lot of effort and time into this. It’s a nice focus for them,” Ms. Jacobson said.
“They have a good feeling about it,” she added.
Every day during 8th hour, the students collect the cans, rinse them and crush them. Then a volunteer takes them to the recycling center near the Wheeling Police Department.
